Business intelligence is focused on collecting and analyzing information about customers, decision making, competition, market conditions, general economic, technological, cultural trendsand decision support information (intelligence). The goal of business intelligence is derived from the strategy: The business purpose or a mission statement.

These goals may rely on short-term (eg quarterly) or the long term (eg increase market share, creating shareholder value, etc.).
Business intelligence is considered the successor of Management Information Systems (MIS) from the previous decades.
